Office Makeover! Seven Great Tips For Making Your Office More Professional

by Christine Silva

The appearance of one's office is very important to making your client feel at ease. Cluttered, messy offices not only look unprofessional, they give the impression that the business owner doesn't care about his business.

Appearance is everything when you are trying to impress a client. Clean, professional offices add perceived value to your services, and allow you to increase profitability and referrals. So, here are some great, inexpensive ways to make your business more appealing to clients when they first walk through the door!

1. Eliminate all clutter. Don't leave stacks of papers, junk, or knick knacks everywhere. It makes people uncomfortable, and can make a large office feel cramped and stifling. Get some cheap fling cabinets, or filing boxes (even cheaper!), and pack stuff away. Keep countertops and desks free of unnecessary junk. A computer and one photo is okay, but try to remove everything else out of sight.

2. Get live plants. Most green houseplants are economical and easy to care for. Water them once a week and they will grow and look great all year round. Most big warehouse stores have dozens of varieties of inexpensive houseplants. They will make your office look clean, polished, and lively. Don't use artificial plants. They look cheap.

3. Clean walls, or repaint at least once a year. Dirty walls filled with scuffs and dingy paint make an office look drab and uninviting. Clean the walls or, even easier, repaint once a year. Paint is a cheap way to make your office shine!

4. Get nice magazines for your waiting area. Most magazine subscriptions are very inexpensive online, and you can get specials that are up to 90% off the cover price. Be careful though; make sure that you choose magazines that are not offensive to families or children. Reader's Digest, Highlight for Children, and Better Homes & Gardens are good examples.

5. Have coffee or bottled water available. A twenty dollar monthly investment is all you need to provide coffee or bottled water to your clients. Clients also enjoy having something to hold while they are waiting to be helped.

6. Dress professionally. Sometimes, just a simple polo and a nice pair of khakis makes a big difference. A little goes a long way. It might be helpful to keep a clean shirt at the office, too, just in case you have a food spill. Nothing looks worse than a dirty shirt during a client meeting!

7. Smile! And make sure your staff smiles, too. Friendliness is the least expensive way to make a positive impression on your client!
