Uninterruptible Power Supply
by Scott Paul
UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) systems have definitely been around for a while. Most of us have seen a large power strip that our computer is plugged into. This is a UPS unit. The point of a UPS system is to provide a small amount of battery backup in case the main grid power is turned off. How exactly does UPS system do this?
Most UPS systems have two stages of power isolation which help to clean the power. Utility power is very speratic and can fluctuate. These power fluctuations cause electronics to fail and is the number one cause of computers dying. The two stages work pretty well, but when the power is cut, there is a period of switching that happens when the system goes to battery power. This switch causes a fluctuation which can harm or damage or sensitive electronic equipment.
UPQ (Uninterruptible Power Quality) is the new standard in UPS systems. UPQ systems have 5 stages of isolation to make the output power a perfect sine wave. Battery backup is also seamless and flawless in these types of systems. UPQ technology is trademarked by a company called Power Innovations which is pushing this technology to the forefront. This company is a leader is producing custom power cleaning products as well as providing battery backup and is considered the standard setter for this technology.
As you can see, UPS systems are starting to become a thing of the past much like DVD's and VHS tapes. As technology continues to improve, so will the ability to protect the sensitive electronic equipment that we use every single day to push technology forward.
